THE school summer holidays are far from over and there are plenty of places around Essex to take your children for free.
We have rounded up 10 things to do in the county which will not cost you a penny.
- Frinton Beach
Enjoy miles of sandy beach and the sea when visiting Frinton beach. Parking on the promenade is even free if you can find a space in time.
- Epping Forest
Situated close to London, Epping Forest offers 2,400-hectares of woodland to explore with your loved ones. It's stunning all year round and full of wildlife including deer.
- Tiptree Jam Museum and Tearoom
When it's raining outside, there is still lots to explore indoors including Tiptree's famous jam museum. The town is home to world-famous fruit jams and even has its own museum celebrating the history of its jam.
- Highlands Park
This scenic park located outside Chelmsford city centre is full of both history and beauty. Hylands House is a Grade II neo-classical villa situated within Hylands Park. The park is 232 hectares and includes ponds, gardens and paths to ramble around. The park has also hosted V Festival and other music events over the years.
- Clacton Pier
The Essex coast is renowned for its traditionally seaside towns which includes Clacton.
As well as miles of beaches, Clacton also has a pier which was named Pier of the Year in 2020 by the National Piers Society.
The pier can be walked on free of charge, but you can also spend money on its amusements, rides and foods too.
- Castle Park
Colchester, which is known as Britain's oldest town, is steeped in history.
In the heart of the town lies Colchester Castle which dates back to 1076 when the Normans first started constructing it.
Surrounding the castle is Castle Park which includes historical sites such as the Roman Wall, Victorian Bandstand, and the Castle itself.
- Chelmsford Cathedral
Also on the list of the best free things to do is Chelmsford Cathedral.
Chelmsford, which was awarded city status in recent years, boasts a stunning cathedral in the city centre.
There are many free concerts and exhibitions running throughout the year.
- Pet's Corner
This animal sanctuary in Harlow has a farm yard atmosphere with a range of domesticated animals and some exotics.
Entry is free with a donation box and a gift shop where the money from these contribute to the running.
- West Mersea Beach
Another scenic spot on the Essex coast is West Mersea Beach.
There are miles of shingle beach to walk on, as well as ice cream vans and restaurants when you need a break from strolling.
There area is also renowned for its magnificent sunsets.
- Wat Tyler Country Park
This attraction is 125 acres and declared an Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the wildlife present with Hawthorn scrub, meadow and saltmarsh habitats.
It includes a miniature railway, sculpture trail, visitor centre, refreshment facilities, birdwatching hides and an adventure playground for the children.
