A SKATEBOARDING event hoping to discover Harwich’s next Olympic champion delighted children in the town who tested their abilities.

Residents tried their hand at the sport during a day of free lessons after the sport made its Olympic debut at the 2021 summer Games.

It comes after Dovercourt’s skatepark, in Wick Road, was named one of 100 in the country which will benefit from having free skateboarding lessons provided.

The sessions were carried out by Team Rubicon, who chose Dovercourt’s park as one of 100 skate parks to join them in a nationwide Talent Pathway programme, which looks to provide a route for people to progress in the sport right the way through to the top.

Town councillor Jo Henderson, who helped bring the programme to the town, said it was a “really good day”.

“It was an absolute pleasure to see so many happy children with beaming faces,” she said.

“Some of the younger ones had incredible determination and stamina to keep going all day.

“It was really worthwhile to be able to provide families with an exciting event and equipment at no cost. They went away happy and that’s what it’s all about.”
