THE unparalleled efforts of the British Merchant Navy during the Second World War are to be recognised during a fitting ceremony.

Supporters will gather at the immaculately kept memorial, in The Quay, Harwich, to mark Merchant Navy Day on Friday.

More than 30,000 merchant seamen lost their lives during the Second World War, a death rate proportionately higher than any of the armed forces.

The Merchant Navy Association Harwich and District Branch will be observing the day at 11 am.

Andrew Tannock, from the Harwich Branch, said all are welcome to attend.
