Designs for a major new children’s hospital that will serve Essex have been revealed.

Architects Hawkins/ Brown are behind the proposals for the new facility which will be built on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The hospital is due to open in 2025 and will care for children and young people from across the East of England, as well as youngsters around the country and from abroad.

The proposals are moving forward after a planning application featuring the designs was submitted to Cambridge City Council last week.

Outline planning permission has already been granted for the project, with health bosses now seeking approval for reserved matters.

Harwich and Manningtree Standard:

Embedding genomic and psychological research will take place at the new facility, which will be offering clinical expertise in physical and mental child health.

Those behind the new hospital say it will be a brand new state-of-the-art hospital designed to “take care of the whole child, not just their illness”.

Building work could begin as early as 2023, providing full planning permission is granted.

An outline business case must also be approved by HM Treasury.

Harwich and Manningtree Standard:

Images released of the hospital show it will have plenty of outdoor and green spaces.

The site is estimated to have a total footprint of around 36,000sq m and a further 5,000sq m of research space.

Members of the Cambridge Children’s Network have helped shaped the initial designs and helped architects with how the hospital might look and feel.

It is made up of children, young people, parents and carers from across Eastern England.
