FAMILIES enjoyed a thrilling evening of eye-pleasing entertainment after a school hosted “possibility the biggest fireworks event” in its history.

The Mayflower Primary School hosted a fireworks extravaganza on Thursday to mark Guy Fawkes celebrations, and it certainly went off with a bang.

The exploding exhibition took to the skies above the Dovercourt educational complex and saw the sky painted with eye-catching bursts of light and colour.

Prior to the display, which mesmerised the hordes of parents, carers, and students who attended, school staff and volunteers served up an array of tasty treats.

Everything from hand-warming hot chocolates, chips and burgers to popcorn and candy floss were dished out to the bustling and buzzing crowds of families.

Organised by the PTA’s chairwoman, Julie-Ann Walker, and facilitated by the school’s site manager, Mike Irving, the display generated more than £4,000 in funding.

Liz Bartholomew, headteacher at Mayflower Primary School, said: “We were overwhelmed by the attendance at the event.

“We are truly grateful to everyone who attended to make this possibly the biggest firework event Mayflower has ever held.

“Although we have only missed one year of fireworks, due to the pandemic, it has clearly been missed.

“We are very conscious that it's not just an event for Mayflower, it really is for the whole community and the community came out in force to support us.

“It was a fabulous family feel and enjoyed by one and all. Thanks must go to Miss Julie-Ann Walker, our site manager, Mike Irving, and staff and parent helpers.”
