A LIFE-SAVING sea charity has launched a fundraising appeal in memory of a much-loved volunteer.

John Teatheredge died aged 63 on Boxing Day last year due to complications following an operation for a heart condition.

He spent 44 years with Harwich RNLI and became second coxswain after joining the crews at the tender age of 17.

The lifeboat volunteers are now launching a fundraising appeal in memory of John, which will support the next generation of lifesaving at Harwich.

A spokesman for Harwich RNLI has said: " John Teatheredge was a family man, husband, father, grandad and dedicated lifesaver.

"During those 44 years the volunteers at Harwich RNLI saved 427 lives and rescued countless others in distress.

"No matter the time of day John would drop everything, leaving his family to help complete strangers in distress.

"Being sorely missed by all at Harwich RNLI a memorial fund page has been created to support the next generation of lifesaving at Harwich RNLI."

To celebrate John's loyalty to the community, the Harwich Haven Authority have also unveiled a memorial bench at the historic Ha’penny Pier in Harwich.
