THE chairman of a football club in Parkeston has been handed a special award for his contribution to grassroots soccer.

Bill Davidson, chairman Parkeston Welfare Park FC, was presented with the Essex FA’s Spirit of Grassroots Football Award.

Mr Davidson was nominated by CGN Restaurants, which runs McDonald’s restaurants in the district, for the award.

Matt Ladkin, head of community events at CGN Restaurants, said Mr Davidson is dedicated to Parkeston and that the park is one of the best in the area.

“The true determination of Bill to get young kids into football is admirable.

“Bill does this as he firmly believes this will help in engaging with young people to drive away antisocial behaviour and crime in the area.

“If Parkeston Welfare Park FC didn’t win a game, Bill wouldn’t be bothered as long as they enjoyed it.

“Bill truly is all about his community and without him, the area that is now home to the club would be an old piece of overgrown waste land.

“We are very proud to work alongside Bill and support him and the football team.”
