A HISTORIAN is set to host a talk about his childhood growing up in the 1950s.

Throughout the winter months, the Harwich Society runs a monthly meeting with a guest speaker with interesting and humorous stories subjects covered.

The monthly talk for November is with historian Norman Jacobs, who will speak about his youth growing up in Hackney in a talk called ‘Pie ‘n mash ‘n prefabs.

Colin Farnell, Harwich Society chairman, said: “For many Harwich Society members the winter programme of monthly talks is the highlight of the Harwich Society year and they are always well attended and enthusiastically received.

“Norman Jacobs is very interesting and entertaining so I am sure that Friday’s talk will be very well received.”

The blitz made many families in the east end of London homeless and one solution was to erect pefabs on fields and open spaces to give temporary accommodation to those who had been displaced by bombs.

A spokesman for the Harwich Society added: “It was in one of these ‘modern’ boxes that young Norman Jacobs grew up through the 1950s and 1960s.

“In a lively, detailed and humorous picture of a post-war Hackney childhood, Norman takes us back to an age of rationing, bomb sites, street markets, colourful characters and camaraderie.”

The talk will take place in Navigator Hall on Friday, November 26 at 7.30pm.
