A NEW charity branch that rescues and cares for ex-commercial hens is set to host its first rehoming day.

The Chicken Rescue UK Harwich branch opened this year and is calling on residents who have space to take in new chickens.

Chicken Rescue Harwich has a variety of hens to choose from including red, ginger and coloured hens.

A spokesman for Chicken Rescue Harwich said: “We are collecting more of these gorgeous coloured ex-commercial girls for retirement.

“These posh girls lay a mix of blue, brown, green, beige coloured eggs.

“We don't yet know specific numbers for each breed so it’s a lucky dip which hens arrive at collection points.”

Residents have been asked to indicate whether they want red, ginger or coloured hens when booking for rehoming.

Joe and Jon Nutkins run the branch and their own chicken enclosures have a mix of Rhode Island, Light Sussex, Bluebells, Leghorn and Maran hens.

The spokesman added: “There’s no guarantee on what exact breeds will be available on the day but rest assured you will be bringing home girls who will show curiosity in what you’re doing near them, listen to what you’re telling them and become extremely friendly ladies.”

The rehoming day will take place on Saturday, February 11. For more information email CRUHarwich@gmaill.com.
