A Scout group which helps teach youngsters invaluable life lessons has celebrated an important milestone.

The 1st Lawford Scouts celebrated the group's 75th anniversary since its foundation in 1948.

Celebrations were held at the group's Venture Centre 2000 headquarters, in Bromley Road.

After a two-minute silence at 11am to mark Remembrance weekend, the Scouts and Cubs had visits from police cadets, the fire service and first responders.

During the celebration the children took part in activities such as map reading, and a camp fire, and were treated to an exhibition of archive materials from the group’s history.

Christine Meadway is a trustee of the 1st Lawford Scouts and has been with the group since the early 1990s when she moved to the area.

She said: “Our leaders of years gone by were also invited to an afternoon tea.

"It was a good get-together for people - it was very enjoyable.”

Christine started working for the 1st Lawford Scouts as a secretary in 1993, and her three children joined the group.

She said: “It was founded by a young man called Ron Good, the first Scout leader.

"He had been a Scout before the Second World War and had a son called Ken Good.

“Ken persuaded his father, and the Reverend from Saint Mary’s Church in Lawford to set it up.

“It is a privilege to work with the group because it provides a much-needed facility for the local community. There are so many people benefit that benefit from it.

"It gives young people life skills to take forward in life. If they have been connected with the Scouts, they have a degree of self-confidence and are used to being part of a team.

“Badges range from communication skills, money management, cooking skills and more.”
