A CONCERT and festival of words and music will take place in Harwich this week to mark the two-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The free festival will start at 6.30pm on Thursday, February, 22, at The Electric Palace Theatre on Kings Quay Street.

The event will mark the two-year anniversary of when Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and will also honour the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny who died in jail on February 16.

Alexei Navalny’s death has been described as political assassination attributable to Russian leader Vladimir Putin with the US president Joe Biden calling it “yet more proof of Putin’s brutality”.

Tony Elliston, chairman of the Harwich Cultural and Community Projects, said: “The death of Alexie Navalny has shocked the free world.

“Shocked, but perhaps not surprised, by this further evidence of Putin’s paranoia and brutality."

The next charity aid trip to Ukraine will be on March 26, following 12 aid trips to Ukraine in 2022 and 2023.

There will be an opportunity during the festival to donate to the aid trips with people being asked to book ahead to this address tony.elliston@harwichccp.com to avoid disappointment.
