GRANTS are up for grabs in a bid to get more people growing their own healthy food.

Maldon District Council is now providing funding to individuals, groups and organisations who want to promote growing healthy food.

Grants are available for schemes designed to get people growing fruit and vegetables for the first time, helping to promote the benefits of growing their own produce or which educate people about healthy eating.

Applications can be made for up to £1,000 which can be spent on buying resources, renting allotments or training to provide education and skills.

The council says one of the aims of the Ready, Steady, Grow scheme is to give all residents the opportunity to grow and enjoy their own food.

The council has identified obesity, mental health, social isolation and the ageing population as the four key areas its wishes to see influenced as a result of the scheme.
