A CYCLIST was reunited with a lost photograph after 40 years thanks to an appeal by the Samaritans.

During its regular book sale, volunteers with the charity found a retro picture of a cycling event amongst some donated books.

They resolved to find its owner by launching a social media appeal.

Four months later Ken Baker arrived at the January sale to collect the photo.

He revealed it was taken in the 1980s during a record attempt to cycle from Birmingham to London.

Ken and his father-in-law missed out on the record by a mere few minutes, but managed the journey in less than five hours.

The cyclist lost the picture, which shows the pair riding the bicycle, after including it in a box of cycling books he was set to donate.

He cycled to the Samaritans' Colchester base to collect the photo.

The charity's book fair takes place between 10am and 2pm on the last Saturday of every month, excluding October and December, at Walsingham Road Community Centre, off Southway.
