COCA-COLA has published a safety warning about their bottles, according to the Food Standards Agency.

Coca-Cola European Partners is issuing precautionary advice for opening Coca-Cola Original Taste PET bottles because the bottles may have damaged neck rings.

This means that the bottle might have a sharp rim edge which could present a safety risk on opening.

This would make it dangerous for anyone who tries to open the drink.

The bottles affected are 1.5 litres with the best before date of 30 September 2020.

They have the batch codes 083EK3TT:TT, 084EK3TT:TT, 085EK3TT:TT, 086EK3TT:TT, 087EK3TT:TT, 088EK3TT:TT, 089EK3TT:TT and 090EK3TT:TT.

Shoppers are being urged to follow certain safety measures when opening the bottle.

The FSA website said: "Coca-Cola European Partners is issuing precautionary advice to consumers who have purchased the above product.

"As a precaution, you should examine the bottle neck ring carefully before opening.

"If you see damage to the bottle neck ring, open the bottle with care and ensure that your hand is placed on the cap and above the bottle neck when opening the bottle."

Product safety notices have been issued to stores selling the item that give more information to customers.

Customers who have bought the bottle are asked to read the advice before attempting to open it.

If it cannot be opened safely, customers have been asked to return the unopened item to the store where it was bought if making an essential supermarket trip.

Food recall and safety warnings are not often issued but should be taken seriously by those who have shopped in store.
