A PLAY therapist hoping to keep children entertained and their minds engaged during lockdown is sending out care packages filled with arts and crafts goodies.

Paula Stubbs, from Colchester, is putting together parcels containing craft materials like paper straws and ribbon, alongside sweets.

She attaches tips and guidance on different activities and drops them off on doorsteps upon request.

“These packs are funded by myself and my husband, with donations of a variety of craft materials,” said Paula.

“We must’ve done nearly 150 packages for at least 300 children from Colchester and beyond, going from one-child families to donating a pack to a family of nine.”

She added: “It started during the first week of lockdown.

“I work in a school as a play therapist, and understand how important school is to many children.

“Parents are trying to home school, but of course it isn’t the same structure as they are used to.”

Paula has also enlisted the help of a friend working in social care, in a bid to provide packages to families in crisis, and is also prioritising children with additional needs.

All she asks in return is for recipients to consider passing on a donation to Colchester Foodbank.

Paula said: “My husband, Des, is my right hand man and helps me so much.

“I also want to thank everyone who has donated towards this and been so supportive.

“I was in Pound Stretcher last week and one of the assistants asked how the bags were going, then helped by applying their staff discount to my bill.”

While demand for the packs has levelled off, Paula is anticipating another rise and will need more willing drivers to drop off deliveries.

If anyone would like to help or secure a pack for their own children, contact Paula via her Facebook page @Pollyanna Stubbs.

“It is relatively calm at the moment, but when we had a rush we had between 20 and 25 deliveries,” said Paula.

“It is important to keep kids active and creative, with the lockdown lasting at least another three weeks.

“We make sure we follow all guidance and precautions put out during the lockdown.”
