A KIND-HEARTED dad is turning to pedal power in an effort to raise funds for his daughter’s pre-school.

Dan Hiskey, 33, is planning an energy-sapping 100 mile bike ride in aid of Tiptree Pre-School Playgroup.

The charity is close to his heart as daughter Alyvia, four, goes there and 20-month-old son Freddie starts in January.

Mr Hiskey set himself an initial target of £500 but has already raised nearly £650.

If he can swell that figure to £750, he has pledged to run ten kilometres straight after the ride.

“I’ve chosen to raise money for the pre-school as the ladies there have been amazing in helping Alyvia develop and get ready for St Luke’s Primary School, where she starts in September,” said Mr Hiskey, who will hit the road for his monster ride on Saturday.

“It’s close to my heart and nice to be able to help a small organisation, knowing any extra help can make a massive difference.

“It’s a not-for-profit, committee-led charity and has been hard hit over the past couple of months, with reduced fee income because of the pandemic.

“It’s not able to apply for Government support packages, either, so relies on fundraising.

“I wanted to do my bit and help raise money for all the stationery, books, play equipment and dressing up outfits and, of course, staff personal protective equipment for when they reopen.

“It’s obviously vital that when the pre-school reopens, it’s safe both for the staff and children.”

Mr Hiskey, who is married to Danielle, will start and finish his ride from the pre-school, getting underway at 5am.

He is planning a loop which takes in Colchester, Manningtree, Clacton and Colchester again before following the back road towards Maldon.

“I’m a keen cyclist and have managed 100 miles before, so I think and hope I’ll be OK physically,” said Mr Hiskey, who lives in Rectory Road, Tiptree.

“But I’ll find it hard mentally, without my best mate and regular cycling buddy Philippe Bilby.

“He’s not able to join me, as he’s just become a dad, and I’ll miss him, because it makes a huge difference when you’ve got someone to count the miles down with.”

Tiptree Pre-School Playgroup, in Barbrook Lane, has been running since 1962 and runs two setting for more than 80 children.
