HUNDREDS of Santas will hit the streets of Colchester in the run up to the festive season as a popular event supporting the Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals Charity returns virtually.

The charity’s iconic Santa Fun Run will not be able to take part in Castle Park as it returns for its 11th edition this year, however, the group is hoping going virtual will open it up to more people.

Those wishing to take part in the virtual Santa Fun Run should don the famous red robes and take on a distance of 5km, 10km, a half, or a full marathon on Saturday, December 5, raising money for the charity at the same time.

Fundraisers can also take part on a different day as long as their progress is tracked via a running app like Strava.

Angie Tillett, senior fundraising manager, said: “Due to the restrictions around Covid-19 this is a chance for us to open up our annual Santa Fun Run to a much wider audience.

“We are urging novice runners to use Public Health England’s One You Couch to 5k app and set themselves the challenge to get fit and healthy for the festive season whilst raising money for our hospitals and community settings at the same time.

“This is a fantastic, fun event in the lead up to Christmas and is suitable for people of all ages and abilities.

“Families, friends and work colleagues are all encouraged to take part.

“You don’t even have to run – you can jog, walk or stroll if you prefer, or even push a buggy.

“Not only that, you can choose your own route and location. We can’t wait to see what people will choose to do.

“It’s been a strenuous few months for the NHS and we really want to see a record-breaking number of Santas around Ipswich, Colchester and beyond joining in the festive fun.”

The entry fee only covers costs so the charity asks people to raise at least £30.
