School children have taken on the challenge of walking the distance from their school gates to Lapland.

Children of All Saints Primary School in Maldon are taking it in turns to walk the length it would take to reach Lapland from the school gates.

So far they have walked over 800 miles, only 1400 to go.

The school were inspired by the Proclaimers song '500 miles' after they couldn't host their usual school fundraiser.

PTA Chairman Amy Legg said: "Like all schools, we at All Saints’ have had to try and come up with some innovative ideas to raise money, as we can’t do our usual fundraisers.

Some of the children have gone the extra mile and combined the walk with litter picking to ridy up the area, and one even dressed as a dancing hippo.

"We were inspired by the Proclaimers song, 500 miles - they walked 500 miles then 500 more for their love of Scotland- could we do that for the love of our school.

"Each child is walking a section of the way with their families and then sharing their pictures on our school community page.

"We have had a walker dressed as a big dancing hippo, which has attracted a lot of attention in the town, plus two of the children who have combined their walk with litter picking - so not only raising money for school, keeping fit and spending time with their families, they have also helped to tidy up our area.

"We thought we would share some happy positive news at a time when the news is full of sadness and worry.

"We have the most amazing school community and have all come together in these difficult times, whilst still maintaining our physical social distance."
