BIG-HEARTED animal shelter staff are calling in residents to join their pooch friendly fundraiser after lockdown crashed their plans.

The RSPCA Danaher Animal Home, in Wethersfield, usually hosts a sponsored dog walk every year.

But this year the shelter has been forced to get creative and adapt its plans in 2021 due to coronavirus.

Danaher’s home facilities manager Karen Joyner said: “Every year we organise a sponsored dog walk to raise vital funds for our centre and the animals we take care of.

"This year is no different although we’ve had to adapt to adhere to the lockdown rules that are still in place; so we’re asking people to participate from home!”

The team is aiming to rack up 45,000km between April 1 and June 19 which is roughly the the circumference of the planet.

Karen added: “We’re hoping to get lots of willing fundraisers on board to help us walk around the world in 80 days.

"It’s no mean feat but we’re sure we can do it and raise at least £1,000 in the process.”

The sanctuary is asking resident to log the distance they walk when they're out with their dogs or enjoying a family hike so the local community can work together to pool their distances and hit the 45,000km - nearly 26,000 miles.
