THE latest food hygiene ratings have been revealed for restaurants and takeaways across Colchester.

Here is a selection of some of the best and worst ratings, based on the latest inspections by hygiene teams and correct as of June 10.

What do the numbers mean?

0 - urgent improvement necessary

1 - major improvements necessary

2 - improvements necessary

3 - business generally satisfactory

4 - business good on assessment

5 - business seen as very good

Each restaurant is also judged on three categories ‘food hygiene and safety’, ‘structural compliance’ and ‘confidence in management’. Each section is awarded a mark from ‘very good’ to ‘very bad’ and for ‘confidence in management’ from ‘high’ to ‘no confidence’.

One star

  • The Indian Cottage, in High Street, Kelvedon, was awarded a food hygiene rating of one (major improvement necessary) by Braintree Council on February 18.

It got a 'fair' for both food hygiene and safety and structural compliance and 'little' for confidence in management.

Two stars

  • Lynn's, on Moorside Business Park, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of two (improvement necessary) by Colchester Council on January 7.

It got a 'very good' for food hygiene and safety and 'high' for confidence in management but 'poor' for structural compliance.

Harwich and Manningtree Standard:

Zhoosh, in Lightship Way, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of five

Three stars

  • The Castle Butchery, in Barrack Street, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of three (generally satisfactory) by Colchester Council on April 28.

It was rated 'fair' in terms of food hygiene and safety and structural compliance and received a 'some' in terms of confidence in management.

  • I & A Butchers, in North Station Road, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of three (generally satisfactory) by Colchester Council on April 26.

It got a 'fair' for food hygiene and safety and structural compliance and 'some' for confidence in management.

  • Britts Grill, in Iceni Way, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of three (generally satisfactory) by Colchester Council on January 14.

It got a 'good' for food hygiene and safety, 'fair' for structural compliance and 'some' for confidence in management.

Brunch, in Middleborough, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of five

Four stars

  • Burgers, Wings & Ribs, on North Hill, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of four (good) by Colchester Council on April 16.

It got a 'good' for food hygiene and safety and confidence in management and a 'fair' for structural compliance.

  • Ali's BBQ House, in The Parade, Queen Elizabeth Way, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of four (good) by Colchester Council on April 15.

It received a 'good' for food hygiene and safety and structural compliance and 'some' for confidence in management.

  • The Hare & Hounds, in Garlands Road, Layer Breton, was awarded a food hygiene rating of four (good) by Colchester Council on April 9.

It received a 'good' for food hygiene and safety and structural compliance and 'some' for confidence in management.

Five stars

  • Brunch, in Middleborough, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of five (very good) by Colchester Council on May 12.

In terms of the following three categories - food hygiene and safety, structural compliance and confidence in management, it was rated good.

  • Zhoosh, in Lightship Way, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of five (very good) by Colchester Council on May 11.

It was marked 'very good' for food hygiene and safety and good for both structural compliance and confidence in management.

The Best Western, in London Road, Marks Tey, was awarded a food hygiene rating of five

  • Toasted & Roasted, in Culver Street East, Colchester, was awarded a food hygiene rating of five (very good) by Colchester Council on May 7.

In terms of the following three categories - food hygiene and safety, structural compliance and confidence in management, it was rated good.

  • The Best Western, in London Road, Marks Tey, was awarded a food hygiene rating of five (very good) by Colchester Council on May 7.

It was deemed good in the food hygiene and safety and structural compliance categories and high in terms of confidence in management.
