A WOMAN has been arrested after a blue BMW X5 was involved in a five-car smash.

As well as the BMW, four other vehicles were damaged in Cranes Farm Road, Basildon, last night.

A 34-year-old woman, who police say had a toddler in the car at the time, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and driving without insurance

She is still being quizzed by police. 

A spokesman for Essex Police, said: "A woman has been arrested after a collision on Cranes Farm Road yesterday evening.

"We were called shortly before 8pm on Wednesday 11 December to reports that five cars - a BMW, Mazda, Vauxhall, Audi and a Hyundai - had been involved in the incident.

"The driver of the Audi, a man in his 30s, was treated for injuries that are not life-threatening or life-changing.

"A 34-year-old woman, the driver of the BMW, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and driving without insurance."

A spokesperson from the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision in Cranes Farm Road, Basildon, at 8.03pm last night (December 11).

"On arrival, crews confirmed that one man in his thirties was trapped following the collision, which involved three vehicles. Firefighters managed to release the man by 8.39pm, before leaving him in the care of the Ambulance Service." 

A spokesperson from the ambulance service, said: "We were called at 8.15pm with reports of a collision on the A1235 in Basildon. We sent two ambulances and took two people to Basildon and Thurrock Hospital for further care."
