Frustrated families have been kept up at night by noisy roadworks - with work then continuing into the day and impacting those working from home

Work, linked to Basildon town centre improvements, is taking place in Cherrydown East, in Basildon, and will continue until November 6, from 8pm until 6am.

However, families in Trafford House and Morello Court say they cannot take much more of the unbearable noise throughout the night.

While those working from home under Covid-19 guidelines have criticised the work, claiming it continues during the day.

Tacha Price, 25, who lives in Trafford House with two children, said: “Every single night since the road works I have been having both kids’ sleep disrupted and my son waking up exhausted going to school in the morning because he’s had such rubbish sleep.

“It feels as if they are doing works literally on your door step, it’s that loud even with the windows closed.”

Essex County Council stated the permits for night work only applies to the resurfacing of the road, and that since the start of the works, steps have been taken by its traffic management team to reduce the noise and ensure loud machinery is kept to a minimum.

Jack Barker, who works from home says he has had to resort to going to a nearby Starbucks to work as the noise is so disruptive.

He said: “It’s absolutely insane. It’s in the day as well as the night. We have had nothing put through our letterboxes, we’ve just seen signs rock up. There’s families with children living here.

“I can’t even sleep, I’m having to go and sit in Starbucks and work as I’m working from home at the moment.”

A spokesperson for Essex County Council, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience to residents in Trafford House for noise at any time.

"These are essential improvements which we must carry out as part of the major Basildon Town Centre Improvements Scheme.”
