GREGG Rodger was the two-goal hero as LITTLE OAKLEY enjoyed the bragging rights in their Thurlow Nunn League derby at neighbours HARWICH AND PARKESTON.

The Acorns ran out 2-1 winners in Monday's first division south showdown, making amends for their 2-0 defeat against the Shrimpers on Boxing Day.

It was a sweet victory for Matt Carmichael’s side, who had taken an early lead through Rodger – only for Jordan Heath to fire home from the penalty spot and make it all-square at a sun-drenched Royal Oak.

The derby clash was watched by a bumper crowd of 643 and both sets of supporters played their part in creating a tremendous Bank Holiday atmosphere.

Oakley had been in exceptional form before losing their previous two and got off to the best possible start with a goal inside five minutes.

It came in slightly fortuitous circumstances, after a defensive lapse by Ryan Heath.

The deep-lying midfielder was caught in possession and Rodger took full advantage, skipping round keeper Sam Felgate before firing high into the unguarded Shrimpers net.

It was a bodyblow for the hosts but they were quickly on level terms, after a foul in the area by Lewis Wood on Jordan Heath.

The Harwich skipper dusted himself down before slotting into the bottom left-hand corner.

Both keepers were called into action during what became an even, hard-fought first half.

Oakley’s Dan Joyce had to be alert to tip over a speculative lob by Jamie Beecham before diving to his left to keep out an effort by Elliot Johnson.

At the other end, Felgate made an excellent stop from point-blank range.

The rivals traded chances in the early stages of the second half.

First, Harry Mann’s low cross from the right found Rodger, whose first-time effort was parried by Felgate.

Then, at the other end, Joe Knight drilled across goal and just wide of the far post.

The contest was hotting up and it was Oakley who regained their lead through Rodger.

The talented teenager gobbled up his chance after a scramble following a long throw into the area.

Jordan Heath turned and volleyed just over on a couple of occasions – clipping the top of the bar on the second - as the hosts battled for a share of the spoils but it was not to be for Kieron Shelley’s side.

Both teams end their league campaigns on Saturday, when Harwich host Burnham Ramblers and Oakley go to Newbury Forest.
