LUKE Prosser says Colchester United’s players are in a ‘good place’ following their impressive start to the League Two campaign.

But the U’s skipper has stressed they are not carried away with their fine early-season form.

John McGreal’s side lie fourth in the table, having enjoyed their best start to a season since 2004 after claiming 15 points from their first eight games.

Prosser admits it is a confident Colchester squad at present – but knows that there is a long way to go.

Prosser told the Daily Gazette: “Everyone’s in a good place at the moment but we’re only eight games in so there’s still a lot of football to be played.

“It’s still early days – there’s teams who have got off to a really good start and will they stay up there, who knows?

“But we’re all pleased with what we’re doing and that’s all we’re concentrating on and all of the focus now is on Oldham, on Saturday.

“I suppose in January and February time, you start looking at where you are but we’re in a healthy position and we want to stay up there.

“You have a look at the table and you’re all curious about what the results are elsewhere.

“But it’s early doors and we just want to concentrate on ourselves and pick up as many points as we can – it’s a good start but it’s a long way to go.”

Colchester are currently the leading scorers in the fourth tier with 17 goals, with only Peterborough United having hit the net more frequently this season in English football’s top four divisions.

The U’s also boast the third-best defensive record in League Two, having conceded just five times so far.

“We know that if we can do our job at the back, which we’ve been doing with four clean sheets out of eight now, the boys at the other end are full of confidence and scoring goals,” said Prosser, who has previously won promotion from League Two with both Southend United and Northampton Town.

“It was a really good win for us against Cambridge.

“We knew that we needed to back up the point at Tranmere and that’s something we’ve done since the start of the season really.

“We’ve got good points away from home and then come back home and got the three points.

“Cambridge had too many chances and we got away with a few, especially at set pieces which isn’t like us but at the same time we’re clinical at the other end.”

Prosser returned to the Colchester starting line-up against Cambridge after missing their 1-1 draw at Tranmere Rovers due to a controversial suspension.

The 30-year-old was handed a one-match ban after referee Ollie Yates had incorrectly booked Ryan Jackson instead of Prosser at Cheltenham Town, prior to the U’s centre-back being shown a yellow card himself later in the match.

“I still can’t believe it now,” added Prosser.

“Everyone asks me why I was suspended and I try to explain to them what happened but that’s done.

“We did really well at Tranmere and the gaffer has picked me (against Cambridge) and we did well again, so we’ve got a fantastic squad.

“There’s good competition for places – it gives gaffer a headache but I’m sure it’s a good one that he wants.”
