TOM Lapslie says he was delighted to make a welcome return to Colchester United’s starting line-up last night after a frustrating spell on the sidelines.

The tenacious midfielder helped the U’s claim a 3-1 win over Yeovil Town, after making his first start for just over a month following knee surgery.

Lapslie missed six games in total during his lay-off after undergoing an operation to remove a floating piece of bone in his knee at the end of August.

It had initially been thought he might be sidelined until mid-October but the 22-year-old returned against the Glovers – and says he enjoyed being back out on the pitch again.

Lapslie said: “It’s only been a month but it feels like it’s been a lot longer.

“They said four to six weeks out initially – it’s been four and a half weeks, so I’m a few days late!

“I was always going to be pushing for it to be as early as possible without being stupid and thankfully touch wood, it’s all been good.

“I’m not a great watcher – I’ve been sitting watching the games but I’m just pleased to be back playing football again.

“I’m always ready and I work my hardest with the physio and sports science department to get back as fit as possible, as quickly as I could.

“Everything went well and touch wood, I’ve had no recurring problems from it.

“I think the manager puts his trust in me and believes in me.

“They ask me if I’m fit and ready to go and obviously, I’m going to say yes!”

Lapslie played his part in helping Colchester move back up to fourth in League Two with the win over Yeovil, at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Frank Nouble’s brace and Tom Eastman’s opener saw John McGreal’s side clinch victory, despite Tom James’ late consolation.

Lapslie added: “It was good to go in 1-0 up after the first half and we took all of the feedback from the gaffer on board at half-time and were excellent in the second half.

“We generally start well at home and it’s good to be going in at half-time with the lead.

“They had a little bit of play in and around our box in the first half but we felt comfortable with our shape.

“I can’t really pick out anyone – all 11 players and those who come on really put a shift in.”
