Colchester United fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Newport County on Saturday afternoon.
Goals from Jamille Matt and substitute Cameron Ping gave the Exiles all three points at Rodney Parade and condemned the U’s to a first defeat in three matches, in League Two.
The result sees Colchester slip to fourth spot after their opponents leapfrogged them in the table and John McGreal’s men host Exeter City, next weekend.
Here, Colchester United reporter Jonathan Waldron rates the players in the 2-0 defeat on the road:
DILLON BARNES 6
Made a smart stop to deny Semenyo but stood little chance with either of Newport’s second-half goals.
RYAN JACKSON 5
Was not up to his usual high standards on a disappointing return to his former club.
FRANKIE KENT 5
Had a good first half but will be disappointed with the nature of Newport’s two goals.
LUKE PROSSER 5
U’s skipper was given a testing time by Matt and Amond; picked up a soft second-half caution.
KANE VINCENT-YOUNG 5
Enjoyed some good runs from defence but could not prevent the U’s from falling to defeat.
DIAZ WRIGHT 6
Was neat and tidy in possession in central midfield against a well-drilled Newport midfield.
TOM LAPSLIE 6
Was typically industrious on his 100th league appearance before eventually being replaced.
COURTNEY SENIOR 5
Showed glimpses of his skill and saw a deflected effort rattle the bar but blew hot and cold.
SAMMIE SZMODICS 6
U’s man of the match. Was always positive and looked lively throughout. Booked.
BRENNAN DICKENSON 5
Got little joy out of right-back Pipe and had a frustrating afternoon before eventually being replaced.
FRANK NOUBLE 6
Worked hard against his old club and unlucky not to score when Amond cleared his shot off the line.
SUBSTITUTES
MIKAEL MANDRON (for Dickenson, 58) 5
Had little impact after coming on up front shortly after the U’s had fallen behind.
RYAN GONDOH (for Lapslie, 75) 6
Showed some positive running and lively footwork in the final 20 minutes or so.
AARON COLLINS (for Senior, 81)
SUBSTITUTES (NOT USED): James, Kensdale, Chilvers, Ross.
