Banter with Burns with Colchester United Supporters Association chairman Jon Burns

DESPITE the elongated journey, the non-award winning pie, the weather and the game itself, I still think it was a “Wise” decision to go to Morecambe last Saturday.

Although in terms of it “bringing me sunshine” into my weekend, sadly not.

Our coach drivers were brilliant, the company on board was fantastic and all was going well as we left Corley Services.

Then the M6 diversion route became a sea of red on the route planners and we lost over an hour stuck in traffic. All just to clear an old footbridge over three weekends when surely some TNT and a bulldozer could have done the trick in a matter of hours.

Seven hours to get there and even more to get home - the things fans do for their football.

Fear not, we had a much-praised pie and a chance to get out of our draw rut against another lowly team to look forward to.

Mush and pastry followed by a flagon of Bovril would have to do, as I looked forward to the game.

Good to see young Jake Hutchinson involved in the warm-up and he would have deservedly made the bench if one of the squad had broken down.

The match itself was a little like the Stevenage encounter.

The opposition were fighting for everything and closing us down very well.

Our goal was courtesy of one of the few players we seem to have with bundles of energy at the moment – Ryan Clampin.

The U’s needed more though but our gentle waves were crashing against the efficient Morecambe sea defences, which left us open for the sucker punch and so it came.

I mentioned the Clampin energy because in my opinion, some of the players look as if they are firing on less than all cylinders.

Ryan Jackson’s two cautions were very tired fouls and if I was the gaffer I would wrap him in cotton wool for his short suspension.

Re-charge him, because going forward he can make the difference.

Goals are our current issue it seems and so I am delighted that Theo Robinson is back with us again.

I really hope that perhaps one or two more faces will join him here before the end of January to bolster the squad.

On the plus side, despite the last few weeks, the U’s are still only three points off third place and now we have three home games to really push on before the end of January.

Lots of threes there and that’s what I will be wanting from the U’s tomorrow against Macclesfield in terms of goals and points, which will take us nicely into our big game against Bradford City on Tuesday.

Good luck U’s and thanks to all of our supporters, both last week and next.
