COLCHESTER United have signed Cole Skuse on a free transfer.

The U's have made their first summer signing after snapping up the experienced midfielder on a two-year deal, following his release by Ipswich Town.

Skuse spent eight years at Town after joining them from Bristol City in 2013, clocking up a total of 278 appearances during his time at Portman Road.

The 35-year-old saw his contract with the Tractor Boys end this summer and after leaving as a free agent, has now joined Colchester.

Skuse has made nearly 600 league and cup career appearances since making his senior debut for Bristol City in February 2005 - ironically against Colchester in a League One match at Layer Road.

He came on as a late substitute in the Robins' 2-0 win, against a U's side featuring his new team-mate, Dean Gerken.

Speaking about Skuse earlier this month, Ipswich boss Paul Cook told the club's website: "Chambo and Cole have been exemplary pros.

"They have been a pleasure to work with in my short time here and you won't find better role models for young players coming through."

Skuse becomes Colchester's first summer signing since the appointment of Hayden Mullins as their new head coach, earlier this month.

The U's have also been linked with Skuse's former Ipswich team-mates Luke Chambers, Freddie Sears and Alan Judge as they assemble their squad for the 2021-22 League Two campaign.
