POTHOLES have become so bad the country is in a state of national emergency, a councillor has warned.

Harwich town councillor Dave McLeod said the army needed to be drafted in to sort the roads which are a danger to drivers and cyclists.

He claimed to have been reporting pothole hot spots to Essex County Council for the last two years and the problem is only escalating.

Roads have crumbled after the cold weather and the council is frantically trying to fill gaps across the county.
