TRAFFIC lights could be the answer to travel chaos at a notorious railway crossing underpass.
A bid for cash is in the pipeline, which could see the controversial priority system near Manningtree Railway Station in Lawford scrapped.
It would be replaced with traffic lights that give more time to each side of the underpass depending on the time of day.
Carlo Guglielmi, Lawford, Tendring and Essex County councillor, announced the project at the latest Lawford Parish Council meeting on Monday.
"When Tesco comes there is money set aside for a change of priority under the bridge," he said.
"We will be discussing a redirection of those funds for traffic lights which would be a fairer way to regulate traffic."
Lawford Parish Council chairman Alan Coley said the traffic lights would be a way to force drivers to give way at the gridlock hotspot.
"There is unacceptable congestion there and it can only get worse especially with the potential for hundreds of homes in Brantham," he added.
