WE pitted the current superstores in our area against the new proposed stores to find out who offers the better value for money.

I kept away from the deals buying four staple items found in many kitchens across the country - milk, baked beans, bread and cornflakes.

It was not unexpected to find Tesco beating the Co-op by 88p but I was surprised to find Sainsbury’s beat both Morrisons and Asda by a considerable margin.

Although, Asda does offer a cheaper Smart Price product that was not available through their online shopping service at the time of our comparison.
