A MAJOR upgrade of Manningtree train station is a step closer after winning a share of £100million funding.

The station is one of four in the East of England to get a slice of the cashpot to pay for improved access for disabled passengers.

It will see new passenger lifts to the underpass at Manningtree Station installed and the move of a staircase on platform two.

Currently, wheelchair users are forced to navigate steep narrow stairs to access the subway, or wait for a station worker to escort them over the track to board London to Norwich trains or transfer from the Mayflower Line.

Detailed designs and costing for each station will be drawn up by Network Rail with the hope the projects will be completed by 2019.

Plans for Manningtree station's upgrades were submitted to Tendring Council last month and are awaiting a decision
