School governors are key

Lynne Gettings, acting headteacher of the Harwich and Dovercourt High School has said governors are a key part of the leadership structure of any school.

Speaking to the Standard about an ongoing initative to recruit more school governors across the district, she said: "A governor is a "critical friend" - supporting, challenging and offering advice to the school's Senior Leadership Team.

"Schools need governors from all walks of life and backgrounds, who can bring different viewpoints, experience, skills and ideas. They are accountable to parents and the community.

"In order to make decisions which are in the best interests of children and young people, governors need to gain an understanding of their school through attending training, as well as visiting the school during the school day."
