A BATTERY-POWERED train has entered its final week of a five-week trial between Harwich and Manningtree.

The train, which is the first to run on Britain’s railways in 50 years, has been transporting passengers on the Mayflower line since the start of January.

But Friday marks the end of the scheme.

The train had been converted into a battery-powered train in a bid to prove the viability of eco-friendly trains in the 21st century.

At a media event at Harwich International Station on Monday those involved in the project spoke about the success of the trial.
