THE site of an axed Tesco store has been branded as the “key” to rejuvenating Manningtree, with hopes it could be used for car parking – although housing on the eyesore plot has not been ruled out.

Tesco has now put the site in Station Road, on the border of Lawford and Manningtree, up for sale, having pulled out of plans for the supermarket in January.

Officers at Tendring Council, which gave the superstore giant permission for the store in July 2011, are now drawing up a design brief for what could be achieved on the site.

Tendring Council planning boss Carlo Guglielmi said due to the size of the site, options other than a supermarket would have to be considered.

He said: “The development holds the keys to rejuvenating Manningtree, it holds the keys to the parking problems and it holds the keys for better shopping for the people here.”
