CONCERNED councillors want more parking provision in old Harwich during the tourist season to stop drivers clogging up the streets.

East ward councillors have been contacted by several residents to say that during the tourist season they are finding it difficult to park outside their own homes because of the increased number of visitors.

Harwich councillor Ivan Henderson said he welcomed the influx of people seeing what the town has to offer but believes something needs be done to alleviate the congestion.

Previously land at Gas House Quay had been mooted by labour councillors as a possible car park but it has since been ringfenced as an employment area.

He said: “Even if it could be considered on a temporary basis then that would be a step in the right direction.

“We have got to find some extra space because hopefully Harwich will get busier and busier."

A pay machine at the Tendring Council car park on Wellington Road has been covered by a black bin bag which has added to the confusion, meaning motorists are being asked to pay for their stay by mobile phone.

But council communications manager Nigel Brown confirmed it was a temporary measure which would be fixed shortly.

Harwich Town Council will discuss the parking problems at their next meeting on July 22.
