A STUNNED driver watched on in horror as a lorry narrowly avoided crashing head-on into several cars as it veered into oncoming traffic.

Jamie Lammas captured shocking footage of the truck attempting to overtake a car on a blind bend on the A120 en route to Harwich.

The vehicle swerves back into the correct lane just seconds before it would have smashed into oncoming traffic at around 50mph.

Mr Lammas, 27, said the occupants of the oncoming car would have almost certainly been killed had it been seconds later.

“I’m originally from Harwich and I’m in the forces based in London so I like to visit the family once a month,” he said.

“I was sat behind an articulated lorry from the Horsley Cross roundabout and he was driving at 40mph until just a few kilometres from Wix.

“We were going around a blind bend in the road and all of a sudden the lorry swayed into the on-coming lane.

“I’m thinking maybe he is just avoiding a cyclist or some sort of wildlife so I slowed down slightly.

“The next thing I saw was a grey Volkswagen Golf hitting the brakes as the lorry, which still wasn’t even level with the car, went for the dangerous overtaking manoeuvre.

“The lorry carried on overtaking the Golf and swung back into the lane, narrowly missing the four oncoming cars which had to slow down.

“The front two oncoming vehicles looked like they were at a stand still as I drove past.”

Mr Lammas, who has served in the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment for nearly ten years, added: “I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“I often see this sort of behaviour on this road, mainly on the straight stretches, but from other vehicles such as cars and motorbikes, not from an articulated lorry.

"If the lorry had hit them then I believe they would be killed or suffered serious injuries.

“I’m glad I’ve caught something on my dash camera that’s actually worth catching and I encourage more motorists to use them.”

The near-miss happened at around 1.20pm on December 21.

Mr Lammas will contact the lorry company to make a complaint but said he will not report the incident to Essex Police.
