THE last BBC pirate radio show from the LV18 was announced on air this week during a ten-day special broadcast from the Harwich ship.
Radio Mi Amigo has been on the airwaves from the last manned lightship, moored at Harwich quay since last Friday.
Presenters including Roger “Twiggy” Day and Alan”Neddy” Turner have told stories of piracy on the high seas during their broadcasts.
But on Wednesday, BBC Essex presenters Steve Scruton and Ian Wyatt came on air to announce their next LV18-based pirate show from August 12 to 14 – set to be the last of its type.
Tony O’Neill, from the Pharos Trust which owns the red lightship, said: “This huge event, with veteran DJs Johnnie Walkie, Keith Skues, Roger Day and others will be broadcast from the bridge studio of the LV18.
“As before it should attract thousands of visitors to the town.
“There will also be ‘audience with the pirates’ shows and pirate radio films at the Electric Palace cinema.
“This is going to be the last one. It’s very sad really, but we are celebrating 50 years this year since the pirate radios were pulled off the air.”
The current radio Mi Amigo broadcast is being held for Pirate Radio Week and will cover with the Harwich Sea Festival on Sunday. It can be found at 106.8FM.
