A COMMUNITY stalwart has raised hundreds of pounds for Ukraine's humanitarian crisis by staging a music quiz.

Dovercourt Bay Ward Councillor Garry Calver and the Harwich Society Quiz Team held the event at Royal Oak Pub in Main Road where Mr Calver arrived with £200 already donated by well wishers who could not attend.

Morrison’s supermarket had also donated raffle prizes as had regulars of the pub.

Fourteen teams filled the hall, raising an incredible £824 by the end of the night.

Mr Calver, said: “The Royal Oak public house is always incredibly generous and supportive towards Harwich Society quizzes and the community followed suit in support of this fund raiser for Ukraine.

"We knew there was a fantastic local team assisting in the aid effort so it was nice to be able to raise some funds to help them to help Ukraine.”

The Harwich Society Quiz Team runs a monthly general knowledge quiz at the Royal Oak public house, in addition to the four or five music quizzes held throughout the year.

Mr Calver added: “We know the local aid effort will make good use of the money and hopefully it will do a little bit to help Ukrainian people during their dreadful ordeal.”
