ORGANISERS of a unique carnival are looking for participants to take part in the procession which will return in the coming months.

The Harwich Guy Carnival, organised by the Harwich and Dovercourt Rotary Club, is set to take place and will poke fun at topical issues in a tradition known as guying.

The carnival is believed to have been started by the Royal Naval Shipyard apprentices in 1854 in conjunction with remembering Guy Fawkes.

A spokesperson for the carnival said: “This year we are keen to encourage entries of all sizes.

“Due to several reasons it has become more difficult to get access to lorries to enter larger floats, but it still possible to enter floats on a smaller scale.

“It is not the size that counts but the taking part and really is about being as creative as you can be.”

Previous years have seen entries ranging from walking groups and floats made from bicycles, wheelchairs, mobility scooters, motorbikes to cars and trailers and even a motorised settee.

The traditional Big Heads will also be present at the carnival and these can be borrowed by attendees to take part in the procession in the week leading up to the event.

Details of where the Bighead and Bucket shop will be announced nearer the time.

The Harwich and Dovecourt Rotary Club is in good spirits following the announcement of new president Chris Bridgewater.

Mr Bridgewater has emphasized building up the club’s membership numbers and making the Guy Carnival an event to remember.

All monies raised from the event will go to local charities and organisations.

The Harwich Guy Carnival will take place on Saturday, October 29.

As in previous years the procession will form from 6pm for a 6.30pm start in Main Road, Harwich at the junction with Ainger Road and will finish in West Street.
