A VICAR is “infuriated” after lead was discovered stolen, shortly before a wedding was due to take place.

The Rev Stephne van der Toorn has now appealed for witnesses following the theft at St Mary the Virgin Church in East Bergholt.

Crooks climbed onto the roof of the landmark and stole four sheets of the valuable material.

The discovery was made when a hole appeared in the church ceiling on Saturday, September 22.

The wedding went ahead in the afternoon as planned and The Rev van der Toorn’s husband later climbed onto the church roof to investigate and realised the lead had gone.

The Rev van der Toorn said she has no idea how much the lead was worth as the incident still has to be assessed by insurers.

An alarm has already been put up to stop the same happening again.
