A WAR veteran read aloud a letter he sent home from a prisoner of war camp as part of a parade and service for VE Day.

Manningtree and District Royal British Legion held a parade along Manningtree High Street on Sunday before a commemoration service at the war memorial.

There were more than 100 members of the public and veterans at the event, marshalled by legion branch chairman Jamie Robinson, and including standards from the East Bergholt Royal British Legion branch, army cadets, and the Manningtree 1334 squadron air training corps.

The Last Post and Reveille was played by Ryan Maslan, from Manningtree.

To end the event, war veteran Stan Daines, of Wix, read a letter he wrote home to his parents and his brother and sister when he was a prisoner of war.
