CONCERNED residents fear newly approved plans for 30 houses will create a “traffic nightmare” in Parkeston.

Developer Southern Property Development has been given the green light for outline plans for the homes at the end of Una Road.

Several schemes to build on the land have been put forward since 1993, but no work has ever started.

The site is part of a larger area of land that has been left vacant since a brickworks were demolished.

The scheme is opposed by Ramsey and Parkeston Parish Council and 85 residents signed a petition against the proposal.

Bill Davidson, chairman of Parkeston Welfare Park and Residents’ Association, labelled the plans as “disgraceful”.

He said: “The main concern of residents is the traffic going through the road.

“It is already bad and to add to it is disgraceful – it will be a nightmare.

“Cars park on both sides of the road and you can’t get a fire crew down there.”

The application includes 18 two-bedroom houses, 11 three-bedroom houses and one four-bedroom house.

Mr Davidson said a letter had been written to developers to request a second access road to ease traffic.

“We had asked them if they could put another side road in to ease the traffic coming up Una Road,” he said.

“Thirty houses is potentially 60 more cars coming down there – it’s absolutely crazy.”

Campaigners have also warned of the dangers of building houses in close proximity to the Carless oil refinery.

In a design statement, Southern Property Development said: “The site already benefits from outline planning permission as part of a larger site granted consent for the construction of thirty homes.

“The principle of residential use is firmly established and, indeed, has been so for some years through a series of planning permissions.

“The proposed residential use is entirely consistent.”
