A MOTHER and son walked away with top awards from a karate club’s end-of-year presentation.

Julie and Lloyd Birch were both successful at the Links Karate Kai event.

Julie was left speechless as she received the most prestigious award of the night – being named Student of the Year for 2014.

She attends the club’s Long Meadows classes, in Dovercourt.

She started training alongside her son two years ago and has since proven herself to be a dedicated student, showing real talent under the careful instruction of class instructor Chris Harris.

Lloyd is also part of the Dovercourt club and a member of the Links Karate A squad competition team.

He has had an outstanding year, winning medals and trophies both from local competitions and international championships.

His successes include a Kyu Grade English Gold, a bronze at the Scottish International, gold at the Central England International, gaining a bronze while competing for the English Karate Federation at the Banzai Cup, in Germany, and another bronze at the Belgium Open.

He also competed for the English Karate Federation and, to end a great year, he received Links’ best male overall award for 2014.
