SIX Harwich Runners turned out at various Parkruns on Saturday.

The highest-placing of them was Richard Flutter, at home on his favourite Great Cornard course, in Sudbury.

Flutter has recently eschewed his heavy 1,000 miles a month cycling regime to focus on training for the London Marathon.

It paid dividends on the day, with Flutter recording his second-fastest 5km time in 18 minutes and 29 seconds. This was just five seconds away from his best and enough to secure second place overall, from 90 finishers, and first V45-49.

Steve Hewes continued his return to racing at the Chelmsford event.

In a bumper field of 410 runners, with the top-eight all finishing under 18 minutes, Hewes ran well to cross the line in fourth place overall and first V40-44 in 17m 37s.

Closer to home, three Harwich Runners were in the mix at the Colchester Castle event. Hannah Jarvis continued her streak of excellent form to bring the first Harwich vest over the line, breaking the 22-minute barrier for the first time to stop the clock in 21m 54s.

She was sixth woman overall and first in the 15-17 females’ group.

Ten places behind her, recording his fastest Parkrun in over a year, was Dennis Warner, finishing 58th overall and third V55-59 in 22m 25s.

Completing the team was Colchester regular Kieran Callaghan, equalling his previous season best in 24m 18s.

Performance of the morning, however, took place within the winding, hilly grounds of Christchurch Park, Ipswich.

Gary Parker stormed to a new best of 19m 22s, slashing 31 seconds from his previous time and placing his best-ever sixth overall out of 263 finishers.
