FREE-SCORING Harwich and Parkeston claimed a 5-1 win at Haverhill Borough in their latest Thurlow Nunn League first division north game, writes TERRY FRANCIS.

The Shrimpers were in top form in the second half to notch up a big victory and move back into the promotion play off places.

The first 15 minutes were uneventful with moves breaking down.

Borough needed points to keep clear of the bottom places in the table but Harwich were taking time to settle and there was little to choose between the teams.

As the half progressed there was some improvement with Borough having a shot that struck the post and the Shrimpers stringing some passes together.

Harwich best attack came when Jamie Beecham weaved his way through the home defence before finally being blocked within a couple of yards of goal.

But a lacklustre 45 minutes ended with neither goal keeper having been troubled.

Harwich boss Sean Tynan had stern words to say to his team at the break and there was an immediate response, with Alfie Canning the provider for Beecham's clinical shot to put the Shrimpers into the lead.

However, only a few seconds later, Haverhill equalised when Connal Mcerlain converted a cross.

The game had come to life and a third goal, all scored within ten minutes of the start of the second half, saw Harwich regain the lead when Luke Mayhew slotted home Beecham's pass.

Borough came close with a shot that was diverted for a corner but Harwich were buzzing now and Brandon Rusby created an opening for Mayhew to score his second goal.

Mayhew had been given a free role by the Shrimpers manager, allowing him to express his talent, and he set up the chance from which the impressive Beecham increased Harwich's lead to 4-1.

In the closing stages substitute Joe Knight did well in the build up that saw Luke Mayhew complete an excellent hat-trick and take his personal tally to 18 goals, in 18 league matches.

On Saturday, Harwich have a crucial match when they entertain second-placed Framlingham Town at the Gwinnell & Sons Royal Oak, kick-off 3pm.

The Shrimpers then visit Leiston Under 23s next Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm.
